Deep Time VT operates from Eagle Ledge Road in Worcester, in the hills north of Montpelier, and the name is the most interesting thing about it.
Deep time is the geological concept — the recognition, arrived at in the eighteenth century, that the earth is unimaginably older than human history. James Hutton, looking at rock formations in Scotland, wrote that he could see “no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end.” Naming a sauna after it is a claim about what an hour in a hot room is for.
It is a reasonable claim. Heat practice enforces a kind of attention that is otherwise hard to reach deliberately. A room at temperature leaves very little capacity for anything except the immediate physical experience, which is why the practice appears in contemplative traditions across several cultures independently, and why the Finnish convention of silence in the sauna is not incidental etiquette.
Worcester sits in the Worcester Range with the Middlesex Notch nearby and substantial state forest around it. This is rural central Vermont, and the setting suits the framing.
Sessions run limited days. Book ahead.
