The Cottage
In 2023 a big focus for us was this old secluded riverside cottage we thought had a ton of potential. Despite being run down and shabby, it had a beautiful hemlock timber frame so we stripped the building down, revitalized the frame, and did a complete renovation. Now The Cottage is a beautiful fully-equipped year round rental for those who want a more comfortable stay while still maintaining the feel of being immersed in nature and enjoying Vermont’s Summer and Winter activities.
The Cottage has all the amenities you may need from the fully equipped kitchen to the three-person sauna in the tiled bathroom. The building is secluded, sits alongside the river and comes with a private entrance, plenty of parking, and your own fire pit for excellent nighttime vibes.
The Cottage comfortably sleeps four adults and their four-legged friends (dog friendly!). The first queen bed is in the first floor bedroom while the second bed can be accessed up the spiral staircase in a lofted second floor. Please note, the loft does not have a door and can only be accessed through the spiral staircase.
We try to make your stay as comfortable as possible! Super fast and reliable Fiber Wifi, smart TV with our logins provided for Netflix & Hulu. We use all-natural cleaning products on our laundry and surfaces. The kitchen is equipped with Green Pan ceramic coated pots and pans (no teflon), Zwilling knives (that are actually sharp!), and plenty of coffee and tea to go around. You’ll have everything you need to wear your chef’s hat. The bathroom is stocked with organic or all-natural personal care products sourced from local brands.
The cast-iron gas fireplace has enough strength to keep the entire cottage warm and toasty. The kitchen expands through a majority of the cottage, offering a massive island with seating for four and a coffee & tea bar that has everything you need to make the perfect cup of coffee, tea or hot cocoa. Enjoy your meals at the handmade dining table that boasts the best view in the cottage – a 180 degree view of the river only steps away.
The bathroom sits next to the kitchen and will have all of the towels and bath products you may need. The bathroom has a traditional sauna that comfortably seats three people and can heat up to 190 degrees. Splash some water with eucalyptus oil onto the hot coals within the sauna to create some steam after a day of skiing, biking, hiking, & fishing!
The river in front is super clean made up of fresh mountain water that has small pools perfect for cold plunging in the winter or swimming and fishing in the summer. The deck in the front is nice and open, two levels, and features a Weber propane grill and comfortable deck furniture, plus a firepit and Adirondack chairs.
Note: 4WD/AWD is mandatory in the winter.
Secluded Mountainside House
In addition to running Brewster River Campground, Matt & Fiona also offer a secluded mountainside house w. sauna just 10 minutes drive down the road from the campground and Smuggs! A great option for families, groups, or anyone visiting the area who prefers a full house in a beautiful and totally secluded natural setting.
Find your calm in our secluded mountainside home located 10 mins from Smugglers Notch. Our home accommodates up to 8 guests and is located on 7 acres of private land. The front of the property features a large pond nestled into a thoughtfully landscaped gentle hill. Paths are maintained throughout for pleasant daytime strolls. The back of the home offers private access to a huge nature preserve w/ wooded trails & streams. Inside, modern conveniences are offered including fully stocked kitchen, traditional sauna, AC, and fast wifi
This home was built with nature in mind. Enter through the front doors and access a truly unique sun room which takes in the warmth from its south-facing windows to allow radiant heat to warm the rest of the home. Natural light fills the home allowing several spots in the home to serve as perfect reading nooks. Desks and work stations are scattered about the home. Along with reliable high speed internet access, this home becomes the perfect sanctuary for those who need to work remote.
The kitchen serves as the heart of the home. Recently renovated through the eyes of two avid cooks, this kitchen is fully stocked with everything a cook can appreciate including sharp knives, cast iron cookware, oils and spices, and everything in between. The massive butcherblock island is ideal for spreading out plus a dining table in the kitchen.
A kitchen, solarium, living room, full bath, mud room, and guest bedroom complete the first floor. The living room features a large screen smart TV and gas powered fireplace. The mudroom features a massive wood burning stove, desk, and access to a guest bedroom with a queen bed. The full bath is located off of the kitchen and offers a beautiful pebble floor shower.
Walk upstairs using the staircase at the center of the home to access 3 more bedrooms. The furthest bedroom has the most unique setup with six large skylights. The chimney from the downstairs mudroom wood burning stove brings in warmth to the bedroom. The bedroom has a queen bed, a desk, and a bookcase filled with books and cookbooks. From this bedroom, there is another room that offers a twin sized trundle bed that can comfortably sleep two people. This room also has a washer and dryer. Adjoining this room is a jack & jill bathroom featuring a wood enclosed step-in tub with waterfall shower. On the other side of the bathroom is another bedroom with a queen bed and walk-in closet. This bedroom has a desk within the room, as well as access to the upstairs sunroom with another desk accompanied by a beautiful view of the pond and mountains.
Head to the downstairs to access the last bedroom/”fun” room and the sauna. This “fun room” contains a queen bed, 2 massive bean bag chairs, foozball, board games, a guitar, functional N64 (with games and 4 controllers), and a 60″ Smart TV.
Warm up after a chilly day on the slopes in the traditional sauna. The Finnish sauna seats 2, can heat up to 185 degrees and is equipped with bluetooth speakers. Splash water onto the sauna rocks to create steam. Essential oils are provided for a truly relaxing experience. Located next to the sauna is a wellness room with rubber floors great for exercise, stretching, and meditating,
Other nice touches include an expansive deck with a Weber grill, Adirondack chairs around a firepit, Sonos speaker, and all tvs loaded with Netflix & Hulu. You’ll never want to leave this place (except for hiking and skiing of course!)
The driveway runs deep into the property before circling around a cherry tree. It offers ample parking for up to 6 vehicles. One car can park in front of the garage. Two cars can park to the right of the circle. And 4 more cars can park around the circle.
Please note: This home is located in the mountains. The public road to this home is plowed often but could become difficult to navigate during snowy weather for 2WD cars. It is possible to use 2WD cars though AWD /4WD is highly recommended in the winter.
