Kelo Spa & Steam is the most committed piece of sauna building in Greater Boston. The banya at its centre is constructed from kelo timber — standing deadwood pine harvested in Lapland, seasoned for decades in the open air before it is ever cut. It is the material Finnish builders reserve for saunas they intend to last, and importing it to Newton Highlands is not a decision anyone makes casually.
Two wood-burning heaters do the work. That matters: wood fire produces a softer, rounder heat than an electric element, and the löyly — the burst of steam when water hits the stones — behaves differently. The traditions here are Ukrainian and Finnish in combination, which is unusual and shows most clearly in the platza service, where a sauna master works you over with oak and birch whisks. Salt and honey glazing, exfoliating scrubs and foam washes are available alongside.
The full circuit is banya, steam room, then one of two cold plunges held near 34°F, with a lounge and a bar for the intervals between. General admission runs as a three-hour reservation and includes robe, towel and flip-flop service, which sets the expected pace: this is a half-afternoon, not a quick stop. Private bookings take the whole facility for parties of up to eight, extendable to a maximum of twenty-four.
Worth checking before you go: Kelo has run separate days for men and women at various points, and weekend availability has been restricted during busier seasons.
