Saltaire Sanctuary

Saltaire Sanctuary in Mashpee combines halotherapy with heat, and the name carries an unusual reference — Saltaire is a Victorian model village in Yorkshire, built by a mill owner for his workers and now a World Heritage Site.

Salt therapy involves sitting in a room where micronised salt is dispersed into dry air, typically for around forty-five minutes. The practice descends from the observation that workers in European salt mines had unusually low rates of respiratory illness. Modern rooms replicate the atmosphere with a halogenerator. Evidence exists for some respiratory symptoms; the broader claims are less well supported.

Mashpee sits on the Upper Cape between Falmouth and Barnstable, and holds the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s tribal lands — the community that met the Plymouth colonists and has lived on this land for some twelve thousand years. Mashpee Commons is the town’s commercial centre.

The Cape’s cold water is close at hand: Popponesset Bay, Waquoit Bay and Nantucket Sound all sit within a few minutes.
