NRDC Room

NRDC Room operates in Acushnet, just north of New Bedford in the South Coast region of Massachusetts.

New Bedford was once the richest city per capita in the world, built entirely on whaling — the industry Melville wrote about, and which ran from here across the Pacific through the mid-nineteenth century. The city’s decline after petroleum replaced whale oil was steep, and its recovery has been long and partial. It remains the highest-value fishing port in the United States by catch value.

Acushnet sits inland from the harbour along the river of the same name, a smaller and quieter town serving as a residential neighbour to the city.

The South Coast has been notably underserved by wellness provision. It is a substantial population — New Bedford and Fall River together hold nearly two hundred thousand people — with a fraction of the facilities found in comparably sized areas closer to Boston. Local options matter more here than they do in the metro area.
