Seoul Spa and Sauna

Seoul Spa and Sauna brings the Korean jjimjilbang tradition to West Hartford, and it is worth understanding how different that model is from anything in the Nordic lineage.

A jjimjilbang is a large public bathhouse organised around multiple rooms at different temperatures rather than a single hot cabin. Guests move between them over several hours — a hot kiln room, a salt room, a jade or charcoal room, cooler rooms for resting — alongside wet bathing areas with pools at varying temperatures. The gender-separated bathing areas are traditionally nude; the shared common areas are not, and guests wear provided uniforms.

The cultural framing is also different. A jjimjilbang is a place families spend an afternoon, where people nap, eat and talk, and where the heat is a setting rather than an event. Korean spas frequently offer body scrubs — the vigorous exfoliation known as seshin — which is an experience visitors tend to remember.
