Stamford Custom Saunas designs and builds saunas rather than operating one to visit. Listed here as a builder, which is worth stating plainly so nobody arrives expecting a session.
Commissioning a custom sauna is a genuinely different proposition from buying a prefabricated cabin, and the variables that separate a good room from a merely hot one are mostly invisible once construction is finished.
Heater sizing relative to room volume determines whether the space reaches and holds temperature. Stone mass determines whether water produces a proper burst of löyly or a thin hiss that dies immediately. Ventilation determines whether the air stays breathable through a long session — badly ventilated rooms feel stale and stifling regardless of temperature. Bench height determines how much of the thermal gradient you can actually use, since the difference between the top and bottom bench in a well-built room is substantial.
Wood selection matters too. Cedar and hemlock resist warping under repeated heat and humidity cycling and stay cool enough to touch at temperature; resinous species can outgas, which is why sauna interiors are traditionally left unfinished.
