The Plainville Caveman location pairs whole-body cryotherapy with strength training and recovery services, in central Connecticut west of New Britain.
Whole-body cryotherapy is a different proposition from a cold plunge. Rather than immersion, the chamber uses nitrogen-cooled air at temperatures far below anything water can reach — typically below minus 200°F — for two or three minutes. The cold is dry, which changes how it feels considerably: less of the immediate shock of immersion, though the exposure is more extreme by any thermometer.
Whether it outperforms cold water immersion is genuinely unclear. Water conducts heat far more efficiently than air, so a three-minute cryo session may extract less heat from the body than three minutes in a 40°F tub despite the dramatic numbers. The research comparing them is limited.
Paired with heat, either method gives you the contrast cycle. The alternation is what matters more than the specific technology.
Plainville sits on Route 72 near the I-84 corridor, serving Bristol, Farmington and New Britain. Sessions book ahead.
Combining strength training and recovery in one facility removes the main practical barrier to using either consistently, which is the factor that determines whether any of it produces an effect.
