Nolla Wellness

Nolla Wellness in New Haven takes its name from the Finnish word for zero, which is a considered choice for a facility built around heat and cold.

Zero is where the cold half of the practice points. Finnish winter swimming — avantouinti, literally ice-hole swimming — involves cutting through frozen lake ice and getting in, and the water sits just above freezing by definition. The Finnish relationship with that temperature is entirely matter-of-fact in a way the American cold plunge scene, with its emphasis on challenge and willpower, is not.

The naming also fits New Haven’s tendency toward the specific. This is a city with a strong independent culture, a large student population from Yale, and a food scene that takes itself seriously — the sort of place where a Finnish-language name is a signal rather than an affectation.

New Haven sits on Metro-North and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, under two hours from New York, which makes facilities here reachable well beyond Connecticut.

Sessions book ahead, and capacity at independent studios is limited enough that reserving matters.
