SweatHouz at Autry Park brings the chain’s private-suite contrast therapy to a new development on Houston’s Buffalo Bayou.

Autry Park sits between downtown and River Oaks along the bayou, part of the wider effort to reorient Houston toward its waterways. Buffalo Bayou Park, immediately adjacent, runs 160 acres along the water and represents one of the more successful pieces of urban landscape work in the country — trails, a skate park, and the Waugh Bridge bat colony, around a quarter of a million Mexican free-tailed bats that emerge at dusk.

The SweatHouz format is a private room holding an infrared sauna, a cold plunge and a rainfall shower, booked by the hour with nobody else in it.

That model suits the Gulf Coast well. In a climate where summer heat is inescapable and humidity defeats evaporative cooling, the cold plunge carries more of the appeal than the sauna does — an inversion of how the practice works in northern climates, where the hot room is the point.
