Sauna On Location (SOL)

Sauna On Location, trading as SOL, is a mobile operation working out of South Kingstown on Rhode Island’s south coast.

The name states the model precisely. Rather than asking guests to travel to a fixed facility, the sauna arrives at a chosen location — a beach, a private property, an event, a gathering. It is a format that has grown quickly across New England, and it solves a problem urban studios cannot.

South Kingstown covers a large stretch of the Rhode Island coast, including Matunuck, East Matunuck and Green Hill, along with the University of Rhode Island campus at Kingston. The ocean along this shore is cold enough through most of the year to serve as the cold half of a sauna circuit without any equipment at all, which is the arrangement the practice was built around.

Mobile saunas are usually wood-fired. The heat from a wood stove is softer and rounder than that from an electric element, and the löyly — the steam produced when water meets hot stones — behaves differently, which is why many practitioners prefer it despite the extra work.
