Outermost Sauna

Outermost Sauna operates in Wellfleet, and the name is a reference Cape Cod residents will catch immediately — Henry Beston’s The Outermost House, written in a cottage on the Wellfleet dunes in 1927 and still the defining book about this stretch of coast.

The Outer Cape is a particular place. Wellfleet sits between Eastham and Truro on the narrowest part of the peninsula, with Cape Cod Bay on one side and open Atlantic on the other, and most of the land in between protected as National Seashore. The Atlantic beaches here face nothing but ocean until Portugal.

Water temperatures on the ocean side stay below 60°F for most of the year and below 50°F for a good part of it, which makes the cold half of a sauna circuit a matter of walking down to the beach rather than filling a tub. Sauna cultures everywhere developed beside cold water for exactly this reason.

Wellfleet’s year-round population is small and its summer population is many times larger, so availability and hours vary sharply by season.

Confirm before travelling — the Outer Cape is a long drive from anywhere, and roughly two hours from Boston in good traffic.
