Cape Kiln Sauna

Cape Kiln Sauna takes its name from a piece of Falmouth industrial history — the brick kilns that once operated on the Cape — and applies it to a modern sauna operation on the Upper Cape.

Falmouth sits at the southwestern corner of Cape Cod, facing Vineyard Sound, with Woods Hole at its tip and ferry connections to Martha’s Vineyard. It is one of the Cape’s larger year-round communities, which supports facilities that would struggle in a purely seasonal town.

The Cape’s relationship with sauna is more natural than its climate might suggest. Cold water is available nine months of the year, the winters are damp and grey in a way that makes a hot room genuinely restorative, and the summer crowds leave enough of the year quiet for a regular practice to develop.

A well-built sauna is largely a question of the details — heater and stone mass, ventilation, the height and depth of the benches. Independent operators generally get these right because the room is the entire business rather than an amenity attached to something else.

Sessions are typically booked in advance. Summer availability on the Cape fills quickly, so reserve early between June and September.
