The Mega-Plex

The Mega-Plex in Providence is a gay men’s bathhouse, and listing it accurately means saying so plainly rather than describing it as a wellness centre.

Bathhouses of this kind are part of the same lineage as every other facility in this directory, and in North America they are a substantial part of the reason the tradition survived at all. Through much of the twentieth century, when commercial bathhouses closed across the country, gay bathhouses kept the form alive — steam rooms, dry saunas, hot tubs, and the social architecture of a place people go regularly and stay for hours.

The facilities are what the name suggests: a large complex with steam and sauna alongside private and communal spaces. It operates as a members’ club with the access arrangements that implies.
