Dillon’s Health Spa in Quincy shares a name with the far older Dillon’s Russian Steam Bath in Chelsea, and both work in the same Eastern European bathhouse lineage that once ran through immigrant neighbourhoods across the northeast.
That tradition is worth understanding on its own terms. The Russian banya and its relatives are not spas in the American sense. The heat is higher and wetter than a Finnish sauna, the sessions are longer, and the social framing is entirely different — these were neighbourhood institutions where people went weekly, talked, ate and stayed for hours.
The platza is the tradition’s signature treatment: a sauna master works the guest over with bundled oak or birch branches in the hot room, which sounds alarming and is, but which practitioners describe as the single most restorative thing available. The branches are soaked first, and the technique is as much about driving heat into the body as about the contact itself.
Quincy has Red Line service and sits directly south of Boston, making this reachable without a car.
Facilities in this tradition often run separate hours or days by gender. Call before visiting.
