Portland’s original public sauna and bathhouse, Washington Baths is a Scandinavian-inspired wellness destination on Washington Avenue in the city’s vibrant East End neighborhood. Founded by artist Asher Woodworth and inspired by Finland’s urban saunas and Russia’s communal bathhouses, the bathhouse brings a century-old wellness tradition to Maine’s largest city.
The facility features gender-separated wood-fired saunas paired with a serene outdoor courtyard where guests alternate between a heated soaking pool and a cold plunge. The layout follows the traditional Nordic thermal circuit — heat, cool, rest, repeat. Between rounds, guests retreat to an inviting lounge and library where soft music and a Nordic-inspired café menu complete the experience. Light bites include Finnish rye bread, pickled vegetables, and Swedish-style dishes, alongside both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Washington Baths operates on a drop-in basis with no reservations or memberships required. A single entry fee ($36) grants unlimited time — stay for a quick schvitz or settle in for the evening. Capacity is managed to keep the atmosphere calm and unhurried. A silence policy is observed in shared spaces, making Washington Baths a genuine urban refuge. Reviews consistently praise the spotless facilities, warm staff, and the seamless flow between sauna, cold plunge, and lounge.
Open Thursday through Monday, noon to 9 p.m. (last entry at 8 p.m.). Whether you’re a longtime sauna enthusiast or stepping into your first Finnish-style session, Washington Baths delivers Portland’s most authentic communal bathing experience.
