White Mountain Athletic Club serves Waterville Valley, a purpose-built resort community in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest.
Waterville Valley is unusual. The town has fewer than five hundred year-round residents and was developed from the 1960s as an integrated resort — ski area, village centre, and recreation facilities planned together rather than accumulated. Tom Corcoran, an Olympic skier, drove the project, and the Kennedy family were early regulars.
The valley sits surrounded on three sides by national forest, with Mount Tecumseh above the ski area and the Mad River running through. Access is via a single road, Route 49, which gives the place a self-contained quality most New England resort towns lack.
An athletic club with thermal facilities suits this population directly. Skiing loads the legs eccentrically for hours and the cold keeps everything tight; heat afterwards addresses both. In a White Mountain winter, the cold half of the contrast circuit is simply outside.
