Strong House Spa occupies a restored 1834 Federal-style house in Quechee, and the building is a substantial part of what makes it distinctive.
Quechee sits in the town of Hartford in eastern Vermont, best known for Quechee Gorge — a 165-foot chasm cut by the Ottauquechee River, the deepest in the state, spanned by a bridge on Route 4 that stops most people who drive over it. The Simon Pearce glassblowing operation runs from the old mill at the falls downstream.
Spas built into historic houses work differently from purpose-built facilities. Rooms are smaller and more varied, the layout reflects domestic architecture rather than commercial flow, and the effect is closer to visiting somewhere than to attending an appointment. For a practice that rewards being unhurried, that is an advantage.
Vermont’s winters make heat therapy more than an indulgence here. The state runs cold and dark from November through March, which is precisely the climate in which northern bathing cultures developed.
Quechee sits off I-89 near White River Junction, roughly ten minutes from Hanover, New Hampshire. Appointments book in advance.
